Journey through the historic heart of the city and state’s living history.
Located along the Missouri River, Jefferson City is home to some of Missouri’s most iconic landmarks, each with its own story to tell. From the rugged walls of the Missouri State Penitentiary to the grandeur of the Missouri State Capitol Complex, the city invites you to take a deep dive into the rich history and architecture of the Show Me State.
The Penitentiary’s Past
Kick off your historic tour of Missouri and its capital city with a visit to the Missouri State Penitentiary, opened in 1836. For 168 years, this fortress of iron and stone housed some of the country’s most infamous criminals. It was the oldest continuously operating prison west of the Mississippi River. Choose from a variety of fascinating two-or three-hour guided tours to encounter three of its original housing units, eerie dungeons and more. As you walk through the same hallways once shared by notorious figures like James Earl Ray and Sonny Liston, take note of the historical markers placed throughout the cells for a rare glimpse into inmates' turbulent lives. Tours are available from March through November but dress appropriately as the facility has no heating or air conditioning.

Beyond the Prison Walls
Complete your Missouri State Penitentiary experience at the Penitentiary Museum, housed next door in the nearby former warden's residence at 700 E Capitol Ave. The museum showcases a compelling collection of exhibits, from historical photographs and confiscated weapons to remarkable inmate-crafted items, including an intricate lamp made from popsicle sticks and a handcrafted wooden checkerboard table. View a replica cell for a peek into what daily life was like behind the walls. Admission is complimentary with a booked prison tour.
Next, head over to Prison Brews, a themed microbrewery three blocks away that embraces the area's past. Savor craft beers like the Big House IPA alongside hearty pub fare including The Warden’s Favorite buffalo dip appetizer and the Black and Bleu Burger. Indoors, the kitschy ambience includes decor that nods to the historic prison, while outdoors, you can enjoy the outdoor patio and a game of bocce ball.

For a deeper dive into the area's remarkable history, visit the scenic Capitol complex. Serving as the seat of state government and a cultural landmark, the Missouri State Capitol showcases both art and history. Inside, you'll find breathtaking murals by renowned artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and Sir Frank Brangwyn, each vividly depicting the state's rich and diverse past. See the legislative chambers and stop by the Missouri State Museum on the ground floor for exhibits highlighting the state's pivotal role in westward expansion and a collection of Civil War and World War I flags. Don't miss the chance to experience 19th-century life at the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, a meticulously preserved 1850s general store transporting you back to Missouri's territorial days. Admission to the Capitol complex and museum is free; however, booking a guided tour in advance is highly recommended. End your historic expedition at Carnahan Memorial Garden, a beautiful tribute to public service adjacent to the Governor's Mansion.
