With traveling, there is a lot of planning to make sure the trip goes smoothly.

If you are an international visitor, these nine travel hacks will help you focus more on the food and jazz of Louisiana, and less on planning.

2. Research Other Airports

The New Orleans airport (MSY) is Louisiana’s most popular airport for foreign visitors, but international airports are also located in the cities of Alexandria (AEX), and Baton Rouge (BTR).

3. Walk-in Visitor Welcome Centers

Louisiana has walk-in visitor welcome centers statewide with free travel information and maps. Locations include the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge and in or near the cities of Alexandria, Kentwood, Lafayette, Monroe, Shreveport, Slidell and Vidalia.

4. Save Receipts

Save retail purchase receipts to earn sales tax refunds via Louisiana’s Tax-Free Shopping program for foreign visitors. Applicable taxes are usually not reflected on price tags.

6. Remember the Climate

With Louisiana’s subtropical climate, remember to pack sunscreen and insect repellant. For clothing, short sleeves and short pants are recommended during the summer, while light jackets are recommended in winter and layered clothing in spring and fall.

7. Look for Designated Smoking Areas

In most places, smoking is not allowed indoors, particularly in restaurants. To be safe and courteous, seek out designated smoking areas in public places.

8. Gratuity is Not Included

Restaurant checks typically do not include gratuity for wait staff in the price. Add 15 percent to the meal cost for fair service, a little more for exceptional service.

9. Pre-Paid American Cell Phones

Pre-paid USA cell phones are very affordable and readily available at most retail outlets.
