Jackson is one of only four cities, and the only U.S. city, in the world that has hosted the prestigious International Ballet Competition (IBC), where elite dancers compete for awards and recognition. The competition has been held every four years since 1979.

The area now known as Jackson was once part of a volcanic island. Remnants from a long-extinct volcano lie approximately 880 meters beneath the city. Today, the Mississippi Coliseum occupies this volcanic caldera.
