History and Adventure in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia

By Claire Duncan

Bursting with American history and endless outdoor recreation, breathtaking West Virginia is definitely worth a trip. It’s the perfect scenic escape for the passionate historian and rugged explorer in all of us.

Historic Harpers Ferry

Fall in love with the picturesque town of Harpers Ferry, located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. The Appalachian Trail passes directly through the town, and many ambitious thru-hikers take a break here to enjoy the beautiful architecture, friendly locals, and fascinating history. For a blast from the past, check out Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, where the Civil War era is recreated with beautiful costumes and converted storefronts. Or, soak in the great outdoors with fellow hikers and bikers traveling along the legendary C&O Canal Towpath.

Trendy Shepherdstown

Discover idyllic Shepherdstown, one of the oldest towns in West Virginia, located just a short drive from Harpers Ferry. Behind its intricate and classic architecture, you’ll discover trendy shops, unique eats, and a culture all its own. Stop in at one of Shepherdstown’s newest shops, Plum, for funky jewelry and one-of-a-kind pieces. Or, sit down to a delicious lunch at Shaharazade’s, where colorful décor, organic Middle Eastern cuisine, and a staggering tea selection await you. After a jam-packed day, retire for the night at The Bavarian Inn, where you can enjoy the chalet’s magnificent views from its luxurious infinity pool, located exactly 101 feet above the Potomac River.

The Scenic Potomac Highlands

Situated high in the Allegheny Mountains, Canaan Valley Resort State Park offers striking vistas and unlimited outdoor activities. Whether your passion is skiing, rock climbing, golfing, or even whitewater rafting, you’ll find it all here. For unparalleled views of the Potomac Highlands, hop on the scenic chairlift for a relaxing and tranquil ride up the mountain – the return trip is even more spectacular! Travel to nearby Blackwater Falls, to admire one of the most photographed locations in the state. A fantastic site year-round, the impressive amber-coloured falls are sure to take your breath away.

The Stunning New River Gorge

For an exciting and fun-filled day, head to Hawks Nest State Park, for adventure at its finest. Enjoy a relaxing tram ride to the bottom of the New River Gorge, before taking a powerful jet boat tour across the magnificent river. A quirky captain will keep your interest as you marvel at the incredible canyons and the cute, but precarious, fishing shacks lining the river. Afterward, put your fear of heights aside, and take the Bridge Walk for a thrilling view from the New River Gorge Bridge, over eight hundred feet up! It’s the perfect way to cap off your vacation in wild and wonderful West Virginia.
