What Is Distinctly Dutchess?

Beautiful landscapes are the heart of Dutchess County and focal point of many outdoor activities. In just 90 seconds, take the glass elevator up from the Hudson Riverfront, and stroll across the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. The world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge, it also connects to the Dutchess Rail Trail’s 21 kilometers.

The gift of nature is ever present; be part of it on a guided hike through the highlands with Hike New York, or visit the intimate Trevor Zoo. Views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains beyond are breathtaking, especially from atop three fire towers on Mt. Beacon, Stissing Mountain and Ferncliff Forest in Rhinebeck.

Be right in the middle of the action; feel the wind on your face, as you tour the Hudson River by riverboat, sailboat or kayak. Commune with nature at 16 championship golf courses, two among the oldest in the nation. For a more relaxed experience with nature, stroll six estate grounds, gardens and trails.

See where 400 years of American history happened! You can step back in time, and choose which era: Colonial, Quaker or the Gilded Age. Learn about U.S. presidential history at the inspiring Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Tour Springwood, FDR’s lifelong home, and Val-Kill, Eleanor’s retreat. Tour the Great Estates, the gracious homes of the Vanderbilts and families who built the U.S. Tour the Locust Grove Estate in Poughkeepsie, once the home of Samuel Morse; and Wilderstein, FDR’s cousin’s 1888 Queen Anne home in Rhinebeck. The Vanderbilt Mansion and Staatsburgh are Gilded Age palaces built for entertaining.

At the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome museum, the antique planes take flight each weekend with thrilling airshows from June to October, or try an exciting ride beforehand in a 1929 open cockpit New Standard biplane!

Have a memorable meal at The Culinary Institute of America’s four student-staffed restaurants. Visit our farms and markets to taste fresh-to-the-table products; many restaurants feature locally sourced produce. Tour and taste at our wineries, breweries and distilleries.

Plan a getaway to Rhinebeck, renowned for its charming shops, antiques, galleries and fine dining. Whatever your tastes in the arts, you'll find a museum to match your mood. How about an 18th century oil painting by Hudson River School master Frederic Church? Or a giant modern sculpture by visionary artist Richard Serra? Browse the collections at Dia:Beacon and Vassar’s Loeb Art Center. After strolling the galleries at Dia:Beacon, head out to explore hip and happening Beacon and hear live music in the clubs.

Planning your trip is easier with one, three, and five-day Travel Itineraries, such as Hidden Treasures. Discover what makes this place distinctly Dutchess, and perfect for you.
