Casinos, Shopping and Outdoor Fun in Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana
by Heike Bachmann
Can it get any more diverse and exciting than gaming in a glitzy casino at night and gliding along a zipline over an alligator pond the next day? This isn’t a scene out of Indiana Jones; this is Shreveport-Bossier, known as “Louisiana’s Other Side.” Add the year-round festivals, from Mudbug Madness Festival to Red River Revel Arts Festival, excellent shopping and a diversity of entertainment and outdoor options, and you’ll realize Shreveport-Bossier is a dream destination for the entire family!
Shreveport-Bossier’s Riverboat Casinos
Located about 20 miles from the Texas line, Shreveport-Bossier prides itself on being part Cajun, part Texan. Its riverboat casinos are legendary, offering not only a wide spectrum of gaming but also exciting entertainment and dining options. Relax with a drink on the tropical pool deck of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Resort Casino before roaming the almost 32,000-square-foot gaming area, or head for one of the restaurants followed by a concert in the state-of-the-art performance hall. If that isn’t enough, spoil yourself with an escape to the elegant spa.
Shopping, Dining and Family Fun on the Louisiana Boardwalk
Another draw is Shreveport-Bossier’s scenic shopping area, the Outlets at the Louisiana Boardwalk. The 70 stores are laid out like a small village, with water fountains and intersecting pedestrian streets serviced by a picturesque trolley. There are many riverfront cafés and restaurants to relax in alongside the boardwalk promenade, some of them with live entertainment. The youngest guests are invited to ride on a large crawfish and other animal figures at the Louisiana Wildlife Carousel or enjoy the interactive Children’s Pop Jet Fountain. Did I mention that international visitors shop tax-free?
Outdoor Adventure at Gators & Friends
For a bit of nature and adventure, head out to nearby Greenwood, where you’ll find Gators & Friends Alligator Park and Exotic Zoo, an animal park with attractions for visitors of all ages. The giant alligators, whose feedings you can watch during scheduled shows, are certainly the main draw, but Gators & Friends also offers pony rides and a petting zoo with a camel, llamas and kangaroos. My highlight was a zip-line ride over the alligator pond. The zip-line is designed with seven segments and offers great aerial views of the surrounding nature for an unforgettable experience!
Dinner and a Movie at the Robinson Film Center
For a relaxing movie evening, the Robinson Film Center with Abby Singer’s Bistro is the perfect spot. Set in a stylish loft venue, this art house cinema features classic, independent and international films on two screens with 35mm as well as digital projection. Order a drink at the popular Abby Singer’s Bistro on the second floor and enjoy it with your movie. All food and drink purchased there can be taken into the theater. The bistro also has Shreveport’s only public dining balcony and is a popular gathering spot for locals.
From casino excitement to prime shopping, dining, outdoor fun and sophisticated entertainment, you’re sure to have a good time!
