From Minnesota to Wisconsin

Another day of adventure lay before us, so we fueled up with fresh granola and fruit at the Village House Inn. Outside the sun was shining just as predicted. Yay! On to Wisconsin!

The first stop along the road was Grandad Bluff Park in LaCrosse, and we had it all to ourselves. From our vantage point we could see Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. We hiked a bit until our Australian friends spotted a trail off the beaten path. We went for it, and our Aussie friends were thrilled to freely explore this area.

Back in the car we cruised south to the Wooden Nickel Saloon. The quaint bar is known for its burgers, but it was early so no one was quite hungry enough for a full meal. Instead we shared fried cheese curds, which were surprisingly different than the ones we tried yesterday.

We had our first good stretch of road as we headed back out. Soon we were in the charming Prairie du Chien, the oldest European settlement on the Upper Mississippi River founded by French Explorers. First up was Valley Fish & Cheese. They had a giant sturgeon outside which we just had to climb on and pose with. Later we learned it’s the largest carved sturgeon in the world! Inside we tasted cheeses and some wild meats (alligator jerky!) and remarked at how nice everyone was.

Next we headed into town, where we visited Pete’s Hamburgers. There was a huge line of locals, so we knew it was going to be good. Their menu was all burgers, chips and drinks. We got some burgers to go and enjoyed them at our very own picnic.

Two more hours on the road led us to south to the National Brewery Museum in Potosi. It was fascinating to see the evolution of beer in America, and our Aussie friends loved the great vintage signs. We went to the brewery after and shared a flight of beers. Our Australian friends said they’ve never done a beer tasting with such complex flavors. They had always just had drinks in a pub that they didn’t really think about. They loved it.

The day’s final stretch of road took us to our home for the evening: The Pine Point Lodge in Potosi. Rustic and cozy, we stayed in our own cabin for the evening, dining on the cheeses and meats and leftover fudge from the day’s adventures. We swapped many great stories, shared lots of laughs and enjoyed each other’s company. It was the perfect way to wind down from an amazing day.

Tomorrow we head to Iowa. We can’t wait to cross into our third state.
