Welcome to a Journey Along the Great River Road
Blue skies, sparkling waters and open roads. That’s what we set out to enjoy with a couple of friends from Australia along the Great River Road—one winding collection of roads along the mighty Mississippi River that passes through 10 states, starting in Minnesota in the North, and ending in Louisiana in the South. When we arrived in Minneapolis, Minnesota our sense of adventure was bubbling and we couldn’t wait to see what hidden gems we might discover.
A bit of jet lag (OK, maybe a lot of jet lag) for our Australian friends didn’t deter us all from diving straight into an evening of fun. We started out by checking into the Radisson Blu inside the Mall of America, one of the biggest malls in the world and more of an entertainment complex than simply a place to shop. We went to the FireLake Grill House and Cocktail Bar where we were greeted by the owner, who explained that all the food served here is grown within a 200-mile radius (a great farm-to-table example!). From the walleye cakes (made from local walleye fish) to bison burgers and Minnesota wild rice, everything we tasted was delicious and fresh.
Next we checked out all the rides located right inside the mall. It was so fun! We jumped in the kids’ rides and had a blast in the hot air balloons and bumper cars. In the LEGO Store we built tiny LEGO men that made up a faux rock metal band. Then we played some traditional arcade games and took a chance at the balloon pop game.
Later, we were wandering around and found what appeared to be an adult cheerleading competition, which we all thought was wonderful. Then we walked around the mall some more and admired how huge it is. There are stores of every kind at every turn. If you like to shop (or even just window shop) it’s one of the best places to go. We couldn’t help but visit the LEGO Store again because it was just so fun!
Finally we headed to the Radisson Blu Mall of America. In the lobby we saw these incredible egg beds and had to try them. They were so comfortable we all joked that we could give up our room and just stay there for the night.
Tomorrow we hit the road bright and early for another day full of Minneapolis adventure!
